a trip out east
November 2025 - Martin Miller and Miranda Kim are 45, Madison Miller-Kim is 17 (Tom Smith is 19).
Madison is leaving for college next year, and her parents decide to celebrate by taking her on a trip to Takemizu Village.
Madison's been having a rough time ever since Tom left for college. Both of them say they weren't dating, but her parents know she was upset that he hardly ever called, even when he came home for Thanksgiving. Then she found out that he had been sleeping with his drama professor, Lisa Fancey.
She's had other boyfriends, but Tom is her first love, and her parents know all of this has been hard on her.
Martin and Miranda really want to use the trip to spend time with Madison before she leaves.
Of course, Madison is a teenager. She really wants to listen to music, call her friends, and meet boys.
Still, the three of them have a good time together. Madison learns to teleport from a ninja one afternoon while her parents are napping, and even though they spend the rest of the trip searching for him, none of the others see him.
They meet a wise old man who teaches them the Tale of the Dragon.
Madison meets a boy at their hotel. He's vacationing with his family, but they both find plenty of opportunities to sneak off together.
Miranda finds time for a mother-daughter chat one evening in the sauna. "You're growing up so fast baby. I just don't want to see you get hurt."
"I know Mom," she says.
Madison can sigh and roll her eyes, but Miranda knows her daughter is still in pain over Tom, and it makes her heart ache to see it. All of these years of protecting her, taking care of her, keeping her safe, and now there's nothing she can do to stop her daughter's heart from being broken.
