are we grown ups yet?

October 2030 - John and Abby Smith are 24.

"Look at this place!" Abby exclaims. "It's so big. We'll get lost!"

John and Abby both get big raises this year, and they decide to go ahead and buy their dream house. It's much larger than they need right now - three bedrooms, a study, a living room and family room - but they've started talking about having kids. They probably won't for a few more years, but they're thinking about them in that half-terrifie, half-excited way. They still feel way too young to be parents, although some of their friends from college have started having kids.

"Jackson and Rose had twins," Abby tells her husband, "a boy and a girl."

"Jack Cooper III?"

"Of course. And they named the girl Darien after Rose's hometown. What kind of name is Darien?"

John just shrugs. His parents named him and his siblings after leaders during the Revolutionary War, but at least they all had normal nicknames.

But kids are still off in the future. Abby's work has been getting a lot of attention; that combined with James' imminent retirement means she's constantly buried under architectural plans. John's been working overtime too. Abby doesn't know enough about corporate law to understand what is keeping him so busy, but she knows he's been stressed about work since Rachel Cooper joined the firm as an associate. Abby knows the architectural firm will be hers some day, but John will have an uphill battle to beat Rachel out for partner.
