double trouble

September 2030 - Jackson and Rose Cooper are 24, Darien and Trip Cooper are 1 month.

Rose has always wanted to have a baby, but motherhood turns out to be a lot harder than she had expected, especially since her first pregnancy results in twins. At her father-in-law's insistence, she names the boy Jack Cooper III, Trip for short. She names her daughter Darien after her hometown. She's always thought it's a beautiful name.

Rose was the kind of college student who could barely make a 10 AM class; now she's up all night with the twins.

By the time she gets one twin fed and tucked into bed, the other one needs to be changed.

Sometimes when she's holding her child and staring into those big brown eyes, everything seems perfect. But those moments are rare; motherhood, she's discovered, is mostly about bottles and diapers and constant, bone aching exhaustion.

It's easier for Jackson, being a father. When he comes home from work, he's always eager to cuddle his babies, feed them and bathe them, even change their diapers. But taking care of them isn't his whole world like it is for her. Being a father is something added on to himself, another attribute. But for her it's her whole life, and she wonders what happened to the girl she used to be.
